A fine yellow-brown powder composed of spherical particles of silicon, the Si nanoparticles (NPs) with a diameter of or below 10 nm generally exhibit enhanced lithium storage properties due to their small size and large surface area. However, it is challenging to generate such ultrafine Si NPs by a facile and scalable method. Here, we show development of smart magnetic nanoparticles composed of Fe and Si with intrinsically tunable heat generation capability.

The Si nanoparticles were obtained by the reduction reaction of natural clay minerals. As a flexible anode for LIBs, the SiNPs@CFs anode demonstrated a reversible capacity of 1238.1 mAh·g −1 and a capacity retention of 77% after 300 cycles (in contrast to the second cycle) at a current density of 0.5 A·g −1. The Si nanoparticles are covered with a graphene layer, and the close contact between the Si nanoparticles and reduced graphene coating means that a stable composite structure is formed. Silicon (Si) has been considered a very promising anode material for lithium ion batteries due to its high theoretical capacity.

Si nanoparticles uniformly coated with Co-containing N-doped carbon were investigated as an anode material for Li-ion batteries. The Si nanoparticle surfaces were modified with conductive and matrix, N-doped carbon and cobalt element and prepared by a simple pyrolysis process using an ionic liquid that contained nitrogen with metal complex.

To address these challenges, we engineered an empty space between Si nanoparticles by encapsulating them in hollow carbon tubes. The synthesis process used low-cost Si nanoparticles and electrospinning methods, both of which can be easily scaled.
